![]() There are many intriguing new mechanics and a lot more we haven’t seen yet, and I can’t wait to explore the game further when it arrives October 24 on the PC.In an age when video-game demos are on the verge of extinction, Firaxis and 2K Games decided to stand up and show to the public how gamers should be treated. It was enough of the familiar to draw in long-time Civ fans, but brings it all to the uncharted territory of space. You can lure alien wildlife to block a trade route, or even destroy entire cities.Ĭivilization: Beyond Earth is the natural evolution of the Civilization franchise. A third option is to use the aliens against your enemies. ![]() The aliens (for lack of a better word) will remember your evil deeds, and the planet will grow more and more aggressive towards you. The second approach might be easier and more beneficial in the short run, but it will come back to bite you in the ass, literally. You can either leave them be and work around them, or you can plow straight through, killing an life form in your way. When you consider your alliances, you must also consider the way you behave towards the planet’s indigenous species. These favors can last for hundreds of years until you decide to collect, but don’t expect the answer to be an automatic “yes” this is diplomacy we’re talking about after all, and alliances can change. To gain the advantage, we cashed in a favor from a friendly neighboring faction to join our side in the conflict. In the demo, we declared war on The Slavic Federation – a powerful Supremacy faction. This is a new features letting you and your allies help each other without immediate compensation, just an “I O U”. Civilization: Beyond Earth introduces a new tool to your diplomatic arsenal: favors. If you’re not interested in decimating your enemies with space lasers, you can always go the diplomatic route. These useful machinery will help your cause in many different ways some will be able to generate sunlight for your crops, some will boost your troops abilities, and some will rain laser-y death from above. The Technology Web is also your gateway to developing satellites. Of course you can mix-and match different technologies, but we’re guessing that in order to get to the real good stuff you’ll have to commit to one. Genetics will put you on the path of Harmony, while researching terraforming and biospheres will do the same for Purity. The way you decide to advance your civilization will determent the affinity you’ll later fall under – advance your knowledge in robotics and you gain points towards Supremacy. You can guess the two doesn’t get along very well.Ĭhoosing your affinity is done in the new Technology Web. Factions under the Supremacy affinity augment themselves with cybernetics to become tougher and more resilient to the planet’s conditions – thus ensuring humanity will survive, not matter what. Supremacy, on the other hand, use technology to create a better race of humans. They splice their genes with those of the local fauna in order to adapt to their new home, resulting in some cool human-alien hybrids. Followers of Harmony, as the name may suggest, believe the human race should find a way to co-exist on the planet without interfering with its fragile ecosystem. There are two other affinity besides Purity: Supremacy and Harmony. You see, those who follow this specific affinity believe the human race should be preserved as it is, and that all new planets should be transformed to new version of Terra – Earth. Terraforming is a new feature in the game, one that is exclusive to the Purity affinity. They even started terraforming the planet to make it more hospitable to humans. We could see just how advance the civilization was by the size of the main city, and the many plantations, mining areas and trade routes. The demo we saw took place on such a planet, but to speed things up and get to the action,we were shown a very advanced part of the game – taking place far into the future. Beyond Earth takes the next logical step and tasks you with the mission of saving the human race (at least the parts of it you like) by colonizing alien planets. If you remember, one of the more popular way to win Civ V was to build your own space shuttle and thus winning the space race. ![]() But, as an avid strategy fan, the first game I wanted to see was Civilization: Beyond Earth, the new title in the acclaimed Sid Meier’s Civilization franchise.Ĭivilization: Beyond Earth is a direct sequel to Civilization V (sort of), and starts where we left off – space travel. 2K Games had a very busy booth at Gamescom 2014, with lots of cool games to see and play. ![]()
